How Polymer Degradation Properties Works？

Polymer degradation contributes to the modification of polymer melt viscosity and molecular weight distribution. Three types of degradation are commonly used: chemical, mechanical shear and thermal degradation. Chemical degradation can be achieved by using oxygen or peroxide derivatives during or before polymer meltblown, and mechanical shear degradation and thermal degradation can be achieved by increasing the extrusion rate, heat and melt retention time.

For the polymer melt, it is required that the degradation occurs uniformly to avoid uneven viscosity and discrete molecular weight distribution due to inconsistent degradation of the polymer melt. It is also required that the degradation should not be excessive.
