The performance of polymer slicing raw materials is closely related to the meltblown process, and one of the important parameters is the molecular weight and its distribution.

 

 

How Molecular Weight and its Distribution Works?

The molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of polymer raw materials are the most important factors affecting the meltblown process and the performance of meltblown nonwovens. For the meltblown process, it is generally believed that low molecular weight and narrow molecular weight distribution of polymer raw materials are beneficial to the uniformity of the meltblown fiber network.

The molecular weight of a polymer is inversely proportional to its melt flow index (MFI) and directly proportional to the melt viscosity of the polymer melt. That is, the lower the molecular weight of the polymer, the higher the MFI, the lower the melt viscosity, the more suitable for meltblown process of weaker draw.

Typically, polypropylene, polyethylene and their copolymers are designed with MFI in mind, while other thermoplastic polymers are meltblown with melt viscosity or characteristic viscosity to reflect the molecular weight of the raw material. The meltblown nonwovens with higher strength can be produced from polypropylene with a lower MFI. However, the current trend is to use higher MFI slices of raw materials, which can increase yields and reduce heating temperatures, thus reducing energy consumption.

The more concentrated the molecular weight distribution, the better the molecular weight homogeneity of macromolecules, easy to uniformly heat, melt and get a uniform fiber network, therefore, the meltblown process requires the polymer raw material molecular weight distribution as concentrated as possible.
