However, PBAT Biodegradable Granule has deficiencies in mechanical properties, thermal properties, barrier properties and production cost, and a series of modifications should be carried out to expand its application. In the future, the development of PBAT-based composites with excellent overall performance at low cost, taking into account good degradability, bacterial inhibition and durability properties, should be paid attention to and further studied.
PBAT Mechanical Property Improvement
• Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) can improve the mechanical properties and thermal stability of PBAT.
• Thermoplastic starch (TPS) filling, which can significantly improve the tensile strength of PBAT.
• Calcium carbonate filled to promote PBAT crystallization.
• Lignin blended with PBAT exhibits ideal tensile properties and cost can be significantly reduced by 36%.
PBAT Barrier Performance Improvement
• PBAT and PPC were co-blended and extruded and blown into composite films, and the tests found that the PBAT/PPC films had high tensile strength and tear strength.
• The water vapor transmission rate of the PBAT nanocomposite film was reduced by 80% and the oxygen transmission rate was reduced by more than 99% when 0.48% (volume fraction) of the oriented graphene nanosheets were used.
• The PBAT matrix was doped with clay unmodified and modified nanoparticles (seafoam, montmorillonite, and fluorolithium montmorillonite), and the overall thermal stability and barrier effect were significantly improved compared to the pure PBAT nanoclay doping.
• The crystallinity, hydrophobicity, oxygen barrier and mechanical properties of PBAT films (MSPF) were improved with the increase of straight-chain starch content in the modified PUP by modifying polyurethane prepolymer (PUP) with starch to improve its compatibility.
