At the end of 2021, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released the "Guidance Catalogue for the First Batch of Key New Materials Application Demonstration (2021 Edition)", which will be effective from January 1, 2022. Among them, under the category of advanced chemical materials, special rubber and other polymer materials, the new hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) products, HNBR is a highly saturated special elastomer obtained from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) by hydrogenation. Compared with NBR, HNBR contains little or no carbon-carbon double bond in its molecular structure, and it is a kind of special rubber with excellent overall performance because it has better performance of heat resistance, oxidation resistance, ozone resistance, radiation resistance and chemical resistance while maintaining the performance of NBR such as oil resistance and abrasion resistance.

The China Domestic HNBR Market is still in the Initial Stage of Development

In 2021, the China domestic Hydrogenated NBR Raw Material production capacity is 5,000 tons/year, there are mainly two manufacturers, one of them is Shandong Billion Special Elastomer Material Co., Ltd. The total output of the two domestic enterprises in 2021 will be about 2,000 tons, with an overall start-up rate of 40%.

The foreign producers are mainly Lanxess (Germany) and Zeon (Japan), of which Lanxess (Germany) has a total capacity of 10,000 tons/year and produces HNBR in two plants, one in Leverkusen (Germany) and the other in Texas (USA); Zeon (Japan) has a total capacity of 9,500 tons/year and produces HNBR in three plants, two in Takaoka and Kawasaki (Japan) and the other in Texas (USA). In 2021, the domestic import of HNBR from the above two companies is about 1,000 tons.
