Titanium dioxide, has a molecular formula of TiO2 and a relative molecular mass of 79.90. It is also known as titanium dioxide. It is an inert pigment and is considered to be the best white pigment in the world.

It has rutile (Rutile R type) and anatase (Anatase A type) two kinds of structure, rutile crystal structure is dense, relatively stable, optical activity is small, thus good weather resistance, and at the same time have a high hiding power, achromatic power.

The main manufacturing methods of titanium dioxide are sulfuric acid method and chlorination method, of which, about 56% of titanium dioxide is chlorinated products, and more than 70% of this product is produced from the United States DuPont and other major titanium dioxide plants, other countries, including China's titanium dioxide plants are still dominated by the sulfuric acid method.

Sulfuric acid method: using titanium concentrate or acid-soluble titanium slag to react with sulfuric acid to carry out acidolysis reaction, get titanium oxide sulfate solution, and get precipitate of metatitanate by hydrolysis; then enter into rotary kiln to calcine output titanium dioxide. Sulfuric acid method can produce both anatase titanium dioxide and rutile titanium dioxide.

Chlorination method: using raw materials containing titanium, to chlorinated high titanium slag, or artificial rutile, or natural rutile, etc. and chlorine gas reaction to generate titanium tetrachloride, purified by distillation, and then in the gas phase oxidation; in the rapid cooling, after gas-solid separation to obtain titanium dioxide.
