PPO

PPO, or polyphenylene oxide, is a thermoplastic material that has found many applications in various industries due to its excellent thermal and electrical properties. Despite its many advantages, PPO does have some drawbacks that limit its suitability for certain applications.

One major downside of PPO is its high melt viscosity and poor flow properties, which make it difficult to process using injection molding. Another issue is its poor solubility in certain organic solvents, such as halogenated hydrocarbons, which can cause cracking and other types of damage in finished products. Additionally, PPO has poor thermal oxidation resistance, which requires the addition of antioxidants, typically phosphates.

To overcome these limitations, various modification techniques have been developed to enhance PPO's properties and broaden its range of applications.

Blend PPO with other polymers, such as HIPS and elastomers, to improve impact strength and processing performance.

Mineral fiber reinforced PPO/HIPS alloy

Another modification approach is to incorporate mineral fillers, such as glass fibers, into PPO/HIPS alloys to enhance strength and improve stress cracking resistance.

PPO/PPS blends

PPO/PPS blends have been developed to improve moldability, solvent resistance, and cleanability.

PPO/ABS blends

Blending PPO with ABS has been shown to significantly increase its strength, improve stress cracking, and provide excellent electroplating capabilities.
