Product Introduction

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic is used in the production of fibers and yarns, engineering plastics, films and packaging films, and beverage and food packaging boxes.

PET is produced by reacting the monomers purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and ethylene glycol (EG) in the presence of a catalyst. Excess ethylene glycol (EG) and other reaction products such as propylene glycol (PG) and triethylene glycol (TEG) produced during the reaction are subsequently recovered and recycled.

In order to maintain the reactor feed at the required level, it is important to have a reliable measurement of the ethylene glycol (EG) concentration in the recovery line. Ethylene glycol (EG) feed concentration has an extremely important impact on the quality and opacity of the polymer product.

Vaisala K-Patents® online refractometers are used to measure the concentration of ethylene glycol in recovery lines. Measurements taken by the refractometer help adjust the feed of new ethylene glycol (EG) to ensure the correct concentration of feedstock is added to the reactor.
